Last week I headed to the famous WIFH in Atlanta to meet the team behind CosMedix and some serious skincare tips. Being a young woman in my 20s, I have known that this is the most important time to start establishing a skincare regime but I didn’t know where to start. Luckily, I met some pretty smart people who were willing to share their expertise and knowledge with me. I chatted with a top esthetician and asked him some of my burning questions on skincare. This is it ladies, everything you need to know!
What Is The Most Important Thing Women In Their 20s & 30s Need To Know?
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE is key. The aging process is simply the slowing down of the natural process that is our cells dividing (creating new skin, collagen, regenerating organs, etc). The purpose of “anti-aging skin care” is to stimulate the cells to speed back up! When you are in your 20s and 30s it’s important to know that your body is rapidly creating new skin without any help so the focus should be keeping your skin clean and protected.
What’s Your Favorite Skincare Tip?
Pick one night a week to have a “facial night” at home! There is no need to be jealous of how good your skin looks when you leave a spa you can get all of the products you need at home to recreate the same result! A typical facial consists of the following steps: 2 cleanses, 1 exfoliation product, 1 mask treatment, and properly moisturizing the face and eye area.
What’s The Easiest Thing To Start With?
Cleansing off makeup daily helps to keep your pores free from congestion and prevents blackheads from developing.
Is SPF Really Necessary? I Mean, Is It Really?
(Note: I was so guilty of this one. I have darker skin and avoid the sun like the plague, so unless I was headed to the beach, I didn’t think SPF was necessary for everyday life. What I learned is this:) Sun protection is truly the most important anti-aging step. UVA rays can penetrate through the skin straight to your cells and damage your DNA. This causes your cells to stop functioning properly and sometimes they begin to function erratically causing irritation (cancer cells). Over time, these damaged cells give way to wrinkles and sagging because they stopped properly producing collagen and new skin cells.
What Level Of SPF Is High Enough?
PF 30 and 50 block out up to 98% of UVB rays and can last for the majority of the day. It’s important to reapply SPF every two to three hours if you are going to be in direct sunlight for long periods of time.
What Is Retinal? And Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
Retinol is considered a “fountain of youth” ingredient because it feeds our skin cells the energy it needs to duplicate and create fresh ingredients like collagen. As we age our cells begin to naturally slow the duplication process. Retinol increases the ATP (energy) levels in the cell for faster duplication and for the rapid creation of collagen and elastin.
I’m New To Skincare, Give Me The 101!
Those new to professional skin care should start with a cleanser and a moisturizer. Cleansing is one of the most important steps in skincare. Not only does it keep your skin clean but it opens the skin to receive positive ingredients from your serums or moisturizers. If you don’t have a quality cleanser, all the serums and moisturizing ingredients just sit on top of your skin! Once you’ve learned proper cleansing then you MUST have a good moisturizer to re-balance your skin. Cleansing not only takes away makeup but it removes oils from the surface that were used to protect you! Moisturizing helps to resupply that protective barrier which helps to prevent future breakouts.
A special thank you to the team at CosMedix & WIFH! In addition to the indispensable knowledge, they also sent me home with products that are perfect for my age and skin. I took home these:
– Purity Clean – This is an awesome cleanser for morning and night. Ryan highly recommended this one for a quality cleanser.
– Define – Alright this is it. Retinol baby. I was so nervous to try this so I’ve been using it every other day at night after cleansing with Purity Clean.
– Emulsion – This is a rich daily moisturizer (without sun protection) that can be used morning or night. I opt for night because I think it is a little heavier.
– Reflect – A daily water-based SPF 30 spray that should be applied last. Yall, this also works as a setting spray for after your makeup! Two birds baby, two birds.
– Hydrate+ – This is a combination moisturizer and sun protection of SPF17 for everyday use.
I’ve linked to all of the products below so that you can check them out for yourselves! Now is the time ladies, let’s get to work on our skin.
